Australia's student visa rules changed in 2026.
Some changes apply to everyone. Some work differently for Indonesian students.
We've answered the questions Indonesian students ask most, so you can prepare your application with confidence.
This guide gives general information, not advice on your situation.
Most Indonesian students need the Student visa (subclass 500).
It lets you study full-time in a registered course at an Australian institution. You apply online through ImmiAccount after you receive your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).
Three things stand out:
Evidence levels decide how much proof you send with your visa application. They run from Level 1 to Level 3.
Indonesia is at Evidence Level 1. Your evidence level depends on your country and your education provider together.
When both are at Level 1, you generally don't need to send financial or English evidence with your application.
You still need to meet the requirements. Home Affairs can ask for evidence at any time. Keep your documents ready.
The Home Affairs Document Checklist Tool shows exactly what applies to you.
From 1 July 2026, most students pay AUD 2,500.
Eligible primary applicants with passports from ASEAN countries, including Indonesia, pay AUD 2,050.
Family members included in your application pay their own charges. The fee is non-refundable.
Use the Home Affairs Visa Pricing Estimator to check your exact amount.
Yes, in most cases.
From 2 October 2026, most new Student visa applications can't include a partner or children. Students from ASEAN countries, including Indonesia, are exempt.
Two rules still apply:
Apply together. Your family members apply at the same time and from the same place as you.
No adding later. You can't add family members after your visa is granted.
Plan for the extra funds and health cover your family needs.
You need to be able to cover 12 months of costs:
Even if you don't need to send evidence, you must have these funds.
Most degree students need IELTS 6.0 overall, or an equivalent score on another accepted test.
Take your test at a test centre. Online and at-home tests aren't accepted for visas.
Your institution sets its own English entry score, which may be higher.
Home Affairs assesses every Student visa application against the Genuine Student (GS) requirement.
You answer questions about:
your current circumstances
why you chose your course and institution
why you chose Australia
how the course fits your future
Answer honestly, in your own words. Make sure your documents support every answer.
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for your whole stay, including family on your visa
Health and character requirements
Biometrics or health checks, if Home Affairs asks
Processing times change through the year. Home Affairs publishes current times on its website.
For 2026, Australia set a planning level of 295,000 new international students. Processing priority for offshore applications depends on how your provider is tracking against its allocation.
Lodge early, and lodge a complete application. Missing documents cause delays.
From 2 October 2026, most Student visa holders apply for their next Student visa from outside Australia. Some exemptions apply.
Plan your full study path before you leave home.
Yes. Up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks.

Eligible graduates may apply for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485). It lets you live and work in Australia for a set time.
The 485 fee rose in 2026 for most applicants. Eligible applicants from ASEAN countries, including Indonesia, were excluded from those increases.
